Prints or originals?

Thank you for Ben Fulton's excellent article on collecting art ("Art collecting — for the rest of us," Tribune, June 6). I would like to expand on the sentence: "It's also wise, according to [Donna] Poulton, to avoid the print market, a field best left to experts." While that may be true for old master prints, such as etchings by Rembrandt, where value and authenticity may be difficult to determine, it is definitely not true of modern fine-art original prints (such as etchings, reliefs, lithographs and screenprints).

Original prints, especially those printed directly by the artist, are not reproductions of existing works of art.

They are original artworks in their own right. Prints, along with other works on paper, have a wonderful quality and texture that are distinct from paintings on canvas. In addition, they are usually quite affordable and are an excellent way for beginners and experts alike to add wonderful works of art to their collections.
