Sen. Orrin Hatch's annual Utah Conference for Women continues to befuddle me. Much to my chagrin, I opened the paper and read Roxana Orellana's story on the keynote session ("Archuleta's voice soars at Women's Conference," Tribune , Oct. 27). Hatch had chosen as the keynote speaker the 18-year-old "American Idol" runner-up from Murray, David Archuleta. Even Archuleta said, "When at first I was asked to speak at this, I thought it was kind of funny."

The feature photograph in The Tribune for the "women's conference" was of two men, Hatch and Archuleta. There was no mention of women in the story, and there were no women in the photograph. Certainly, men and women can come together and converse even at a women's conference, but the keynote speaker, the one who sets the tone, should be a woman.
