Gov. Gary Herbert's recent rejection of former Gov. Jon Huntsman's voluntary cap on campaign contributions is indicative of the attitude of Utah Republican powerbrokers toward public opinion: They really don't give a rat's bottom ("Herbert won't limit big donors," Tribune , Oct. 19).
While it is quite obvious to most of the population that lobbyists and contributors are buying political influence, the majority of elected officials in this state (Republicans) act as if they don't really care what we think. They are under the unfortunately correct assumption that as long as they have that "R" by their name they will be re-elected no matter what they do. It seems as though these pillars of our community even take some perverse joy in discounting and ignoring the concerns of the very people they are elected to serve.
