I smiled when I read Ron Poulton's vivid reminder of Sen. Ted Kennedy's many weaknesses ("A curious sight," Forum, Sept. 2). It was quite an accomplishment for Poulton to turn a half-staff flag tribute to the late senator into a glowing report of the willingness of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to forgive.

According to Poulton, Kennedy was "a shrewd man, addicted to power and expert at wresting language until it was incapable of holding truth. He lived his life as a distinguished alcoholic, philanderer and adulterer." Poulton apparently missed the irony that nearly identical words have been used to describe Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church. In his case as well, the LDS Church has seen fit to look past Smith's weaknesses and shortcomings and honor the contributions he made.

Perhaps Poulton could do the same for Kennedy.
