Is Lt. Governor Gary Herbert really not convinced by now that climate change is happening? After all, scientists around the world overwhelmingly believe it is ("Herbert doubts climate threat," Tribune , June 16). Just today, the Obama administration reported that warming is causing more heavy downpours, rising temperatures and sea levels, rapidly retreating glaciers, longer growing seasons and altered river flows.
Why does this matter to Utah? Gov. Jon Huntsman's far-thinking and open-minded leadership put this state in the forefront of working on climate issues, through his proposals to reduce greenhouse gases and pollution, conserve energy and encourage new clean-energy businesses. Where will this state go now, if its leadership doubts there is a threat?
All of the measures proposed by Gov. Huntsman will in the long run protect the health and economy of this state, whether or not the lieutenant governor believes in change. Let's lead the parade rather than follow in the dust.
