The Tribune has done an outstanding job reporting on refugees, describing their challenges adapting to living in Salt Lake. Most of the refugees in Utah struggle with literacy skills so limited that they remain isolated at the edges of our society. Exposing this need is the responsibility of the media. Responding to this need is the responsibility of individuals.
These needs seem overwhelming, but there is a simple way for everyday citizens to contribute by donating a few hours a week to help a refugee learn basic English through simple conversations about day-to-day issues, including shopping, riding the bus or accessing health care.
The English Skills Learning Center is a local nonprofit agency that trains volunteers to provide individual and small-group tutoring to adult refugees and immigrants. All that is needed is the motivation to help and the patience to teach our most vulnerable neighbors. It is a life-changing experience. Visit www.eslcenter.org to find out how to volunteer.
The story does not end with refugees arriving in Utah; it continues as we welcome our new neighbors by helping them learn our culture and language.
