I was mortified to read about the impatient SUV driver who crowded and spooked six elk to jump to their death off a cliff in Provo Canyon ("6 elk die after 50-foot plunge," Tribune , Dec. 30). This driver in such a hurry should be prosecuted. How irresponsible. How selfish.
I was on that road today and saw two baby deer trying to cross behind their mother. They made it, thankfully, but it was because of thoughtful drivers who cared enough to slow down. We need to reduce the speed through the canyon, or better patrol the many drivers who race through it unsafely.
When traveling recently between Banff and Jasper, Canada, I noticed they had 7-foot-high protective animal fences for a hundred miles; the animals crossed through underpasses and overpasses. We need something like that in Utah.
Let's do something to ensure that Provo Canyon becomes safer for people and wildlife. Let's stop the senseless killing of elk, deer and moose in Utah.
