Untargeted boycott

Gay people cause me no discomfort and my marriage is in no way compromised if they marry. I opposed Proposition 8 in California, just as I opposed Utah's ban on gay marriage. That said, the movement pushed by opponents of Prop. 8 to boycott Utah, particularly its ski resorts and the Sundance Film Festival, is ludicrous.

Such a boycott would mostly affect Salt Lake City and Park City, neither of which is predominantly Mormon. As a resident of Salt Lake, I lead a comfortably secular life. I resent being categorized into a narrow religious niche by those who make inaccurate assumptions. I have only one wife. I am able to get a beer pretty much whenever I want, even on Sunday! Utah and Mormondom are not interchangeable.

Those angry with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should stay out of Deseret Book, cancel the Deseret News and avoid other LDS Church-owned businesses. Don't take out your frustrations on those of us who may agree with you.
