In 1904, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was in a battle with the federal government over the church's definition of marriage -- one man, many wives. In an attempt to force Mormons to obey the federal government's definition of marriage as one man and one woman, an amendment to the U.S. Constitution was proposed. LDS Church President Joseph F. Smith mocked this proposal with these words:
"I say let the national solons amend the Constitution, to punish and insult and degrade this little handful of men who are rapidly passing away, and when they shall see the magnitude of their acts compared with the insignificance of the cause, they and their historians will laugh at their folly, and write them down asses in the broadest sense."
It is truly ironic that since 1904 Mormons have aligned themselves with the party that once sought their destruction, and now they advocate the same amendments their enemies proposed to destroy their definition of marriage.
