A better aviary
This is an archived article that was published on sltrib.com in 2008, and information in the article may be outdated. It is provided only for personal research purposes and may not be reprinted.

There was an interesting nugget tucked away in the article about the public's support for the zoo and aviary bonds ("Poll: Park bonds favored," Tribune, Oct. 28). The article notes that although the Utah Taxpayers Association is opposed to the zoo bond, it "has remained neutral on the aviary request."

This was itself newsworthy. That this conservative watchdog group is not actively opposing the aviary bond speaks volumes about how serious the situation has become. Tracy Aviary's facilities are in dire need of renovation. In 2006, it was denied accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Without action now, the aviary could close its doors one day soon. Considering that Tracy Aviary is one of only two free-standing public aviaries in the country, and the only one west of the Mississippi, this prospect is incredibly sad.

The cost to average homeowners for the aviary bond is $2.50 a year. Considering the aviary's benefits - particularly its wonderful education programs for children - I hope Salt Lake County voters will agree that it is a small price to pay.
