The state budget was in a deficit, and if Utah legislators had not made their trips to China earlier this year, perhaps the saved money would have paid for the salary of another state trooper or another child would not have had to have been cut from the State Child Health Insurance Program.
The first cut our legislators should make is travel expenses for legislators. I really don't care that they learned how to use chopsticks or picked up fun things for the family at home. Cut 75 percent off the top of their travel budget and put that back into important programs.
