John Purvis ridicules Sen. Joe Biden for riding government-subsidized Amtrak trains, yet he praises Gov. Sarah Palin, whose state and hometown accept huge government handouts ("Shallow minds," Forum, Sept. 9). He gives her all the credit for building a $40 billion pipeline for natural gas that has yet to be built. (She tells us God has it on his agenda; she must know.)

Purvis gives Palin points for executive experience in commanding Alaska's National Guard. I was a member of the Utah National Guard for 12 years and practically all decisions were made by the U.S. Army. Granted, Palin had the Guard help with a forest fire. Maybe that was a world-class executive decision.

Purvis states that "Biden apparently has more foreign policy experience." It is apparent because it is a fact. Palin's foreign policy résumé is paper thin. What does it prove that she has been to Iraq? All candidates have been to Iraq.

Purvis chides the "media people and most of the public" for thinking Palin came out of nowhere. Well, the vast majority of Americans had never heard of her, and I'd be surprised if he had. The media have a right and a duty to check out Palin.
