It is time to stand against an offensive word that has gained popularity. The “r-word” - retard - has found a place in common language and is accepted by many. It is said 16 times in one scene in the film “Tropic Thunder,” which opens this week.

The word hurts, even if it is not directed at a person with intellectual disabilities. For too long people with intellectual disabilities have had to overcome society's stereotypes. It is time for a change that will bring acceptance and inclusion. Visit www.r-word.org to learn how you can be a fan of dignity.

Don't say the r-word. When you hear it, think about 26-year-old Brett Banford of Salt Lake City. Brett is a talented dancer who appeared on “So You Think You Can Dance” and is in the upcoming “High School Musical 3.” In addition to his job, he is a global messenger spokesperson for Special Olympics Utah, an accomplished snowboarder and bowler, on the Law Enforcement Torch Run executive council and a highly involved advocate for the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities.

Help make change by boycotting “Tropic Thunder.” Show Hollywood the impact of its actions.
