Yet another letter about nuclear power and nuclear waste, this one by Peter Kelly (Nuclear recklessness, Forum, July 28). Why so many potshots at EnergySolutions? What has it done that's illegal in this state, and if it is breaking the law why is it not punished and made to stop? Why is it the poster child for bad press? How many times have I heard that the EnergySolutions facility in the West Desert wasteland is in our backyard? Our backyard? Nonsense.
The Utah West Desert is a barren, mostly uninhabited, arid wasteland, for crying out loud! Sure, the desert has its beauty, but it is also a perfect place to safely store nuclear and other toxic waste - if the waste is properly handled and regulated. Aren't they doing that? If not, why? If EnergySolutions or anyone else handling toxic waste is mishandling it or is in violation of the law, I say prosecute them to the full extent of the law. Otherwise, go bark up another dog's tree and leave them alone.
