I was fascinated to read two Page One articles in the June 15 Tribune. In the first, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, among other congressmen, has called for further protection of members of Congress, following the attack on members practicing their baseball skills. The second article tells of Memorez Rackley and her young daughter dying at the hands of an ex-boyfriend, a few hours after she had notified the Sandy police.

I fail to understand why congressmen should be afforded protection not given to a mother and child.

Chaffetz is apparently seeking the kind of protection given to dons and godfathers. Perhaps Mark Twain had it right when he said: "It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress."
