In response to the opinion of Arthur Sandack ("Safety's not their concern," March 20): I don't believe annual safety inspections are needed any longer.

I have been driving for over 50 years and I recall the days when things needed to be replaced or repaired on my vehicles. Ball joints, mufflers, shock absorbers, brake pads would often wear out and be a concern. I feel vehicles are made to last longer now than in the past. It has been decades since I have had to replace a ball joint, shock absorber or a muffler.

Sure, brakes wear out after years but they are made to make a horrific noise when they become a safety issue. The instrument panels have check-engine lights when things become an issue and it is up the owner to follow up or not.

I for one will be happy to have the government regulation out of the business of forcing safety inspections.
