The Tribune editorial ("To add votes, subtract gerrymander," March 18) hit the nail on the head. What we need in Utah is a repeat of the Count My Vote initiative combined with a second initiative to create a nonpartisan redistricting commission. With the turmoil surrounding the 2016 election and the national embarrassment surrounding the Trump administration, this may be the time to get these initiatives on the 2018 ballot.

It must be done before the 2020 census and redistricting take place. The previous compromise between the Count My Vote people and the Legislature sold out the thousands of signatories to that petition.

These critical issues must be removed from the supermajority Legislature to make the changes the editorial calls for and that Utah needs. Who and where are the bipartisan leaders who can get these initiatives before the people?
