I recently learned that one of our state legislators has proposed a bill in our state Legislature to completely do away with state-mandated vehicle safety inspections. Simply stated, this proposed bill is patently absurd.

Like other Utahns I don't like paying for a state vehicle inspection. But what I like even worse is having thousands of vehicles on our state highways that are not safe. The fact of the matter is that too many vehicle owners are lazy and complacent about maintaining their vehicle(s) if not forced by the state to have a safety inspection.

This is a major public safety issue. Without safety inspections, vehicular accidents will surely rise in dramatic fashion, and people will be needlessly injured, and worse yet, killed.

For our state Legislature: Common sense must prevail.
