Our public schools need help. Utah is last in the nation in the amount we spend per pupil. The ballot initiative to raise the income tax is a good idea. But, to be fair, why is Utah so far behind the rest of the country in this regard? It is because we have relatively few taxpayers and a huge population of children.

Could the ballot initiative being proposed by a number of concerned people also include a proposal to limit the child tax deduction to three children? Shouldn't those who have more — and we all know of families of 6, 8, 10, and 12 kids — begin to pay for their education?
