I have been voting in presidential elections since Jimmy Carter defeated Gerald Ford in 1976. Never have I been so unenthusiastic about this task. In this election both major candidates disappoint in so many ways. Yet, in my view, if I refrain from voting or if I cast my ballot for a non-viable third-party candidate I am abdicating one of my most fundamental responsibilities as a citizen.

So this year I must choose between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. I must try to look beyond both candidate's personal flaws and decide which will most effectively deal with our country's most pressing issues. Then I'll desperately hope that better options present themselves in the next cycle.
