My southbound morning commute on I-15 takes me from North Salt Lake to Midvale. I've become increasingly frustrated with how many drivers violate the HOV lane restrictions.

The freeway is generally congested, even stop-and-go traffic between the Warm Springs and 400 South exits. I've counted as many as 30 single-occupant vehicles passing me in the HOV lane in that section of the freeway. Many of those drivers then attempt a last-minute merge through multiple lanes of traffic to exit at either I-80 or 400 South.

On Sept. 13, I merged to the fast lane prior to the Warm Springs Road exit – right behind a Utah Highway Patrol officer (license # UHP 524). I followed the officer through the congestion to the 400 South exit. Thirteen single-occupant vehicles passed the officer and my vehicle in that stretch of the freeway! There was a second UHP car parked in the median, prior to the I-80 westbound exit. Neither officer took action to enforce the HOV lane restrictions.

It's terribly frustrating to watch multiple vehicles abuse the HOV lane restrictions. And even more exasperating to have UHP officers take no enforcement action. Please, either enforce the HOV lane restrictions or make those lanes legally available to all drivers!
