Despite Luana Chapman's assertion otherwise ("Our anthem in Rio," Sept. 14), Americans are not required to put their hands over their hearts during the playing of the national anthem. All the athletes who did not do so were perfectly correct. It is asked that men, not women, remove their hats and that people stand at attention if they are able. Americans place their hand over their hearts for the Pledge of Allegiance, but not for the national anthem.
