Re: "No hate-crime charges in gay men's beating," Tribune, July 21.

The maximum legal penalties allowed in Utah for beating and torturing a person because of their perceived sexual preference is a misdemeanor. Torturing an animal is also considered a misdemeanor, As Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill stated, "We do not have an adequate system of justice."

Under current law, it's practically open season on anyone perceived as being gay. One of the two men who was attacked suffered severe physical injuries from his head being slammed against the pavement. This same man had several teeth knocked out and had injuries to several ribs.

The Utah Legislature can add gender preference to the state's currently very weak hate crime law. In the meantime you, can sock a buffalo in the head or critically wound a gay person. The penalties will be about the same.
