In response to reader Diane Franke ("Thanks, VA hospital," May 7) concerning VA health care for her father, she nailed it right on!

I am a Vietnam combat vet, and for more than 40 years didn't want anything to do with the VA. As with life, things change. I needed health coverage, and the VA was my only option.

I took it and am here to tell you that I'm glad I did. I had a major issue and died on them! They saved my bacon. I spent 6 weeks in MICU and 8½ months at a care center before I was able to go home.

That was two years ago. They have been on the spot with appointments, care, follow-ups, etc., ever since. If they had a bad rap, in my eyes it does not exist. I have nothing but praise for them.
