Since our governor misused time with Barack Obama to whine about the establishment of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument ("Utah guv raises monument worries at White House meeting," Feb. 23), a question and observation.

Is the governor most upset with the lack of communication or the size and establishment of the national monument? Certainly President Clinton knew of the Utah government attitude towards the federal government and national parks and monuments. President Clinton knew it would be a waste of time to communicate with the state government, even with a more reasonable governor at the time, Mike Leavitt.

My thanks to Theodore Roosevelt and all past presidents of the United States who work toward preservation and establishment of public lands.

After all, the residents of Utah and the USA own those lands!
