Letter: Women pay the price when Herbert buys the lies

As a physician practicing in Utah, I am outraged that Gov. Gary Herbert would even consider taking funding away from Planned Parenthood.

First, Herbert was lied to.

Second, Planned Parenthood has done nothing wrong and will continue to provide all health care services regardless of the uninformed actions the governor has taken.

Utah cannot "defund" Planned Parenthood. This is relieving, considering the 36,000 tests for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) they provide Utahns each year to keep families healthy. STIs can cause infertility if left undetected and untreated.

Herbert is hurting the women and families of Utah, as Planned Parenthood is the primary provider for low-income Utah women for essential services such as STI testing and treatment. Planned Parenthood also administers the Personal Responsibility Education Program, which is geared toward reducing teen pregnancy and increasing academic performance. In other words, it helps teenagers graduate high school by reducing the drop-out rate.

Herbert desires to increase infertility rates as well as leave 100 teenagers without resources to help them stay in school. He does this based on lies he is blindly acting upon without doing the appropriate research and self-education.

As an OB-GYN, I stand with Planned Parenthood.
