Livingston, N.Y. • Authorities have charged a 20-year-old woman with killing her newborn after she gave birth in an upstate New York convenience store.

State police say Tara Tomlin, of Livingston, was charged with second-degree murder on Saturday, a day after her son's body was found in a plastic bag dumped in a trash bin outside the store in her Hudson Valley hometown.

Troopers say they found the body early Friday during a search that was prompted by a 911 call from someone saying he suspected there was a baby outside the store.

Police say an autopsy conducted at an Albany hospital determined the baby died from asphyxiation.

Tomlin is being held without bail in the Columbia County jail. It couldn't be learned from prosecutors if she has an attorney.
