Already locked in a cold snap, northern Utah will see the return of snowstorms on Thursday, a trend expected to continue into the weekend.

In Salt Lake City, the temperature was 19 degrees just before dawn Wednesday; with 10 mph winds figured in, though, the effective wind chill made it feel like 8-9 degrees. In Beryl Junction it was minus-24, while Bryce Canyon was minus-20, Milford minus-19, Loa minus-17, Randolph minus-13, Cedar City minus-11, Logan and Bryce Canton minus-9, Pineview Dam minus-6, and Vernal 1 degree below zero.

Ogden's pre-dawn low Wednesday was 16 and Provo had 15 degrees; Moab was at 11, Alta 9, Park City 6, and Duchesne 4 degrees above zero.

Thursday's forecast called for temperatures generally to rise a few degrees statewide. The Salt Lake and Tooele valleys, along with light to moderate snowfall, expected highs in the low-30s and overnight lows in the upper-teens.

Southern Utahns had sunny skies, but cool temperatures in Thursday's forecast. Highs in the upper-40s were predicted, with overnight lows in the mid- to upper-20s.

The Utah Avalanche Center rated the risk for potentially deadly backcountry snowslides at "considerable" for all of Utah's backcountry mountain slopes.

The Utah Division of Air Quality gave a "green," or healthy grade to the entire state.
