Utahns can expect a wet weekend, with snow in the mountains and benches and rain in the valleys.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for snow in the state's central and southern mountains, which will be in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday.

Snow should be heavy at times Saturday, accumulating 8 to 16 inches before tapering off Sunday morning. Then another round of snow is predicted to start falling late Sunday afternoon and continue through Monday night and into Tuesday.

Advisories also are in effect Saturday for Castle Country, with 2 to 5 inches of new snow predicted, and the San Rafael Swell, where 2 to 6 inches of snow could fall.

The weather service is predicting rain and snow showers Saturday along the Wasatch Front; there also is a chance of precipitation Sunday. Temperatures on the weekend are expected to reach the 40s, and the lows should drop to the 20s and 30s.

In St. George, rain and highs in the 50s are predicted for the weekend.
