Former Bountiful Mayor Dean Stahle — who also was editor of The Davis County Clipper newspaper — died April 2, just five days short of his 89th birthday.

He grew up in the family newspaper business and earned a journalism degree from the University of Utah. He then worked for 35 years at The Clipper as a photographer and reporter. He eventually became its editor.

After years of covering the City Council, he was appointed to fill a sudden vacancy on the body. He later ran for Bountiful mayor, lost his first attempt — but then won election in 1982 and served eight years.

As mayor, Stahle led a campaign to redesign downtown Bountiful and managed serious spring flooding in 1983. He also established sister-city relationships with Bethlehem, Israel, and Whangarei, New Zealand.

Before becoming mayor, he also served on the Bountiful Power Commission and on the city's Planning Commission.

Stahle served as a bishop in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a missionary to France as a young man and later was a senior missionary with his wife to the French-speaking Ivory Coast.

Stahle also served in the Army Air Force at the end of World War II.

He is survived by his widow, Maurine, seven children, 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two brothers.
