Here's another sign of just how warm and dry this winter was: Wolf Creek Pass in the Uinta Mountains opened to traffic Monday, more than a month earlier than usual.

"This was a record early opening," said Utah Department of Transportation spokeswoman Eileen Barron.

The pass is on State Road 35 between Francis (near Kamas) and Hanna (northwest of Duchesne). On this date in many years, snowmobiles are still using the route.

"It usually opens to traffic around May 1," Barron said. "Wolf Creek Pass opened a month earlier than usual due to about half the average snowfall" this season.

She added, "It's definitely not an average year for snowfall."

Wolf Creek Pass is the first of Utah's seasonal highways to open this year.

Others still closed include the Monte Cristo Highway, State Road 39, east of Ogden; State Road 65 in East Canyon; State Road 92, the American Fork/Alpine Loop; State Road 148 around Cedar Breaks; State Road 150, the Mirror Lake Highway; State Roads 224/190 through Guardsman Pass; and State Road 153, the Mt. Holly Junction road.
