The student loan giant Sallie Mae has appointed former Rep. Jim Matheson to its expanded board of directors.

Matheson, a Utah Democrat who declined to seek re-election in 2014, is also a principal in the public policy practice of Squire Patton Boggs, a large lobbying firm based in Washington, D.C.

Sallie Mae's board voted to increase the number of seats from 11 to 12 and add Matheson, along with Vivian Schneck-Last, a former managing director at Goldman Sachs.

Both Matheson and Schneck-Last were also named to the board of Sallie Mae's industrial bank subsidiary based in Utah.

Matheson represented Utah in the House for 14 years. The seat he vacated is now held by Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah.
