The Utah Department of Transportation has scheduled an open house to discuss proposed changes for the interchange of Interstate 15 and 10600 South in Sandy to allow easier access to South Towne Mall.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Sandy City Hall, 10000 Centennial Parkway.

For northbound traffic exiting I-15 at the interchange, UDOT proposes to provide an underpass beneath 10600 South to allow direct access to the road that circles South Towne Mall.

That would eliminate the need for such mall-bound traffic to first turn onto 10600 South, and then make left turns across it to go into the shopping center. It is expected to reduce congestion in the area.

UDOT has estimated the cost of the project at $10.5 million, and hopes for work to begin next spring.

It is proposing to allow contractors to bid to design and build the project.

The environmental planning process for the project is currently underway.
