Police were investigating the discovery of a human body found in the Jordan River in Taylorsville on Friday.

A group walking on the Jordan River Parkway Trail on the west side of the river spotted the body face-down near 4500 South, Unified police Detective Jared Richardson said, and reported it to law enforcement about 1:10 p.m.

Investigators and a search and rescue crew responded to the scene, Richardson said, and the body was removed from the water just after 3:30 p.m.

The body was taken to the medical examiner's office, where examiners hope to identify the gender and an age range for the body, Richardson said. Richardson said that based on the height, it appeared to be the body of an adult.

Investigators were trying to determine if there has been any suspicious activity in the area or whether the person just fell into the river, the detective said.

There are "a number of camps" from homeless people along the trail, Richardson said, but police had no indication whether the body was that of a homeless person.
