Utah Highway Patrol troopers on Tuesday busted a man transporting 50 pounds of methamphetamine near the Arizona border.

A trooper patrolling Interstate 15 just north of the border stopped a 2010 Ford Taurus for a registration violation at about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. A K-9 dispatched to the scene indicated there were narcotics in the car, officials said.

A subsequent search revealed two trap doors, under the driver's seat and passenger seat. Troopers found 42 brick-shaped packages wrapped in plastic from the compartments.

The 27-year-old driver was arrested and booked into the Washington County jail.

Officials said they suspect the drugs originated in California and were being transported to the upper Midwest.
