An early Friday morning fire left an Orem woman hospitalized and more than a dozen dogs dead.

Orem Fire Department crews rushed to the home at 905 W. 450 North about 2:30 a.m. to find the residence billowing flames and smoke. Firefighters pulled the woman, 35, from the home along with two dogs, but were too late to save 13 other Yorkshire terriers — 11 of them puppies.

The woman was transported to University Hospital in Salt Lake City, where she was in critical condition Friday afternoon.

Two other residents of the home were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Crews continued working the fire scene as dawn approached, dousing hot spots.

The cause of the blaze was undetermined, pending further investigation.

Losses were yet to be assessed, but the home was believed a total loss, said OFD Battalion Chief Ryan Peterson.
