Owner of four total picks in the third and fourth rounds of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft Tuesday, Real Salt Lake decided to just utilize one in the end. The franchise chose University of Illinois Chicago goalkeeper Andrew Putna with the fourth pick in the third round before passing on the 13th pick in the third round as well as the eighth and 13th picks in the fourth.

The pick to snag the goalkeeper was acquired last year when RSL dealt former outside back Abdoulie Mansally to the Houston Dynamo.

Putna, a 6-foot-2 goalkeeper from Lemont, Ill., served as a captain his with junior year the UIC Flames. Putna earned his second Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2016 and was part of the All-League first team with four of his UIC teammates. The Flames won the Horizon League in 2016, capturing an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament, but their run was short-lived. UIC lost to Loyola 2-0 in the first round of the tournament in late November.

Putna registered seven shutouts and made 49 saves in 2016. He allowed 25 goals his senior year. He leaves the Flames ranking second all-time in wins (41) and shutouts (30). The selection by RSL was likely one made to provide depth at the USL level with Real Monarchs. The Monarchs currently have just one goalkeeper on the roster in Connor Sparrow, drafted in the fourth round by RSL in last year's MLS SuperDraft.

With the 2017 MLS SuperDraft now in the books, RSL went all-defensive in its picks. The club drafted Denver outside back Reagan Dunk with the 13th pick in the first round Friday and later chose Washington center back Justin Schmidt with the 35th overall pick in the second round.
