Kamas Mayor Lewis Marchant was in critical condition after apparently suffering a heart attack and crashing his empty South Summit County School District bus, the Utah Highway Patrol reports.

UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said that just before 8 a.m. Monday, Marchant was driving the bus west on State Route 150 between 100 East and Main Street in Summit County when he crashed into a power pole.

Marchant, mayor since 2001 and a bus driver for nearly two decades, was first taken to the Park City Medical Center by ambulance and then flown to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, where he was listed in critical condition.

Royce said Tuesday that UHP had not been notified of any changes in Marchant's condition; IMC officials said they were not authorized by the family to discuss the mayor's status.
