An early Friday two-alarm fire raced through much of a Murray condominium-townhome complex, causing no injuries but leaving about 30 residents homeless.

Beginning at 2:19 a.m., several 911 calls came in. Murray Fire Department crews found flames and smoke pouring from the roof and walls of several units at the Three Fountains complex, 725 E. 5085 South.

The heat from the flames and intensity of the fire kept crews from declaring control until 6 a.m. By then, eight condominiums had been heavily damaged as flames quickly spread through attic space from unit to unit.

Murray Deputy Fire Chief Jon Harris said six units were "heavily damaged," two more sustained "moderate" damage and two more "minor" damage, but all 10 units were deemed uninhabitable.

Fire investigators were to spend much of the day trying to determine the cause of the blaze, as well as officially assessing losses — initially estimated at more than $1 million, including several vehicles parked outside the units, in addition to the condos and their contents.

There were no injuries, and residents reportedly had either self-evacuated or been aided by Murray police officers as firefighters arrived.

The Utah Red Cross was assisting the displaced with food, shelter and clothing needs.

In addition to Murray firefighters, crews from Unified Fire Authority, Sandy, South Salt Lake, West Valley City and West Jordan responded. In all, about 50 firefighters battled the blaze.
