People in two vehicles exchanged fire at a West Valley City park Wednesday night, witnesses told police.

At about 6:30 p.m. dispatchers received multiple calls reporting the shots at Hunter Park, near 6000 West and 3600 South, said WVCPD Lt. Scott Buchanan.

Witnesses reported that people inside two different vehicles exchanged gunfire in the parking lot of the "large park," which contains sports fields, pavilions and other amenities.

No one at the scene was injured when officers arrived, Buchanan said, but police found shell casings in the parking lot. Later, police were notified that someone who had been in one of the vehicles at the time of the shooting was being treated for minor injuries at an area hospital.

Officers were interviewing that person Wednesday night, Buchanan said.

Police have no information as to the ages, races or other descriptions of possible suspects, Buchanan said, but witnesses described one of the vehicles as a gray Hyundai Elantra sedan, while the other was a "shiny black" Cadillac Escalade or possibly a Chevrolet Tahoe with black rims and tinted windows.

"Many people" were at the park when the shooting occurred Buchanan said, and they were "lucky" that no one else was hurt.

"This behavior is totally unacceptable," he said, noting that police are working to track down any suspects and bring them into custody.
