Lightning struck two people early Friday afternoon — killing one and leaving the other in critical condition — at northeastern Utah's Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.

Brooklyn Reynolds, 14, was riding a watercraft about noon when she was hit by lightning, said spokeswoman Susie Potter with the Daggett County Sheriff's Office. She died at the scene. Reynolds' stepmother, 49, was driving the craft; she was transported to University Hospital with critical injuries, Potter said.

A third person, Reynolds' father, was unharmed and on a separate watercraft. The three people, from Utah County, were in a remote area known as Hideout, Potter said, which is accessible only by boat. A helicopter was dispatched to provide aid.
