The Salt Lake City Fire Department says you can save yourself some grief, and a hefty fine, by making sure you don't set off fireworks in the capital's restricted areas, or outside set times over the next month.

During the Independence Day and Pioneer Day holiday periods (July 1-7 and July 21-27, respectively), SLCFD spokesman Jasen Asay says, legal fireworks can be set off in unrestricted areas between the hours of 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. — with the evening hours extended to midnight on July 4 and 24.

The exceptions, restricted due to public safety and fire danger concerns include:

— All areas east of Foothill Drive, and east of 1300 East to 500 South, including the University of Utah campus

— All areas north of South Temple to State Street and North Temple to 200 West

— City Creek Canyon

— East of 200 West / Wall Street to 300 West

— East 300 West north of Wall Street through Beck Street to the City limit to the north

— All City parks and wildland urban interface areas

— All areas west of Interstate 215

Ignore those restrictions and you could find your celebrations fizzle instead of sizzle, being charged with a class B misdemeanor and fined up to $1,000.

SLCFD also urges law-abiding fireworks enthusiasts to adopt some basic safety tips:

— Always follow the recommendations of the firework manufacturer

— Keep a 30-foot clearance area in all directions from the base of the device, with unimpeded clearance over head (Trees, awnings, etc.)

— Have a bucket of water nearby to place spent fireworks for at least 12 hours before discarding into a garbage can

— Parents are strongly encouraged to supervise children while using fireworks, and no one under 16 are permitted to purchase fireworks

— Should a firework misfire or not light, do not attempt to re-ignite and do not place in water, but instead let sit for an extended period of time then return to vendor

— Never use fireworks during windy conditions or near wildland areas

— Brace all aerial cakes with noncombustible weight items to avoid tipping
