The summer league roster for the Utah Jazz is filling up and beginning to take shape.
League sources, on Sunday, confirmed to the Salt Lake Tribune that two more players will be coming to SLC in the next week. Those guys are 6-foot-7 small forward J.J. O'Brien and seven-footer Bangaly Fofana, who played this season overseas.
O'Brien is interesting. He's somewhat of a local player, having began his career for the Jim Boylen-era Utah Utes. He transferred to San Diego State University, played for the Jazz D-League team Idaho Stampede, and was called up for a 10-day contract with the Jazz in the middle of the season.
He's a do-everything sort of player. He isn't a master at one specific thing, but does a lot of little things well.
"He's happy to be back with the Jazz," O'Brien's agent Brian Elfus told The Tribune on Sunday. "He enjoyed his time in Utah during the season, and he's grateful for another opportunity with the organization."
The Jazz are looking for another wing to add to their roster this offseason. O'Brien's strength is his ability to play multiple positions, offensively and defensively. He's someone who may have an opportunity to stick at the end of the roster, if he plays well.
"I'm really happy to be back," O'Brien said when reached by The Tribune on Sunday. "It's a situation I'm familiar with. I'm used to the team, the coaches and the system. My mindset is to play, do what I do and hopefully it turns into something."
O'Brien will play with the Jazz during the Salt Lake summer league, and then head to the Brooklyn Nets in the Las Vegas summer league.
That means O'Brien has a smaller time frame in theory to make his mark on the Jazz. But that isn't something that bothers him, because the Vegas league is much more of a showcase event, with the NBA scouting each other, essentially.
"It's not something I'm thinking about," O'Brien said. "I'm just going to take my chances and make the most of them. I just have to take advantage of the time I'm given."
Fofana is primarily a defender and rim protector. He's athletic and can finish at the rim, but is pretty raw otherwise offensively. He's intriguing, since the Jazz like their big men to be defensively sound. The jump from overseas even to summer league ball, is significant, however. It remains to be seen how Fofana adjusts.
With the inclusions, the Jazz summer league roster now has nine players on it. The list looks like this:
Olivier Hanlan, G, International
Marcus Paige, G, North Carolina
Tyrone Wallace, G, California
Bangaly Fofana, C, International
Tibor Pleiss, C, Jazz
Trey Lyles, F, Jazz
Quincy Ford, F, Northeastern
Joel Bolomboy, F, Weber State
J.J. O'Brien, F, Idaho Stampede/Jazz
