About a week after rising sophomore guard Jordan Chatman mildly surprised folks in Provo with an announcement that he was leaving the BYU basketball program, Cougar coaches have filled the void with a transfer from Houston.

For one year, anyway.

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported on Wednesday night that graduate transfer L.J. Rose, a 6-foot-3 guard at Houston, has committed to play for BYU next season. Rose, who missed most of last season with a foot injury, is immediately eligible because he has graduated from Houston and will have one year of eligibility left.

Rose visited BYU last month and committed on Tuesday night.

Barring another surprise addition, BYU will have seven guard-types on the roster, as Rose joins returner Nick Emery, returned missionary T.J. Haws, Elon transfer Elijah Bryant, freshman Steven Beo and walk-ons Davin Guinn and Zach Frampton.

L.J. Rose is the son of Lynden Rose, Sr., one of BYU coach Dave Rose's teammates at Houston under legendary coach Guy Lewis. He is the cousin of former BYU wing Archie Rose.

L.J. Rose played his freshman season at Baylor after graduating from Westbury Christian School and played in 33 games. He was a key member of Houston's teams his sophomore and junior seasons, and he averaged nearly 10 points and five assists per game in 2014-15.

A foot injury caused Rose to miss the last half-dozen games in 2015 and all but two games this past season.
