A pair of Midvale men are facing felony aggravated assault charges following and alleged fight and pistol-whipping that left a third person hospitalized with spinal fractures and other injuries.

Documents filed last week in West Jordan's 3rd District Court say the injured man also was also left with a visible imprint of a shoe on the left side of his forehead following the fight. He also suffered a concussion, court papers say.

Prosecutors have charged Joseph Russell Mikulski and Zachary Alan Wood with one count each of second-degree felony aggravated assault.

Mikulski, 39, is also facing second-degree felony counts of drug possession and theft by receiving stolen property, along with other felony and misdemeanor drug and gun charges.

Wood, 25, was also charged with one count of second-degree felony drug possession by a restricted person.

Court records show Mikulski and Wood, who are both being held in the Salt Lake County jail, were set for initial court appearances Wednesday.

Court papers say the injured man, who is identified only by the initials M.C. in court papers, was punched, kicked and whipped with handguns on May 15 after Mikulski and Wood intervened in an argument between M.C. and his girlfriend at the couple's home near 7000 West and 8600 South in Midvale.

Police say Mikulski and Wood were on an upper floor of the home when the couple began to argue. According to witnesses, the two came downstairs and began to hit and kick M.C. in the face and back, including "stomping" on M.C.'s head and back.

Witnesses also told police that both men used handguns — a .9mm and a loaded .380 Sig Sauer pistol — to beat M.C. around the head and at one point dragging him upstairs and pulling his shirt up over his face so he could not see.

Court papers say M.C. suffered injuries to his head, face, chest and legs.

A warrant search of the residence by a police SWAT team found drug paraphernalia, cash, illegal and prescription drugs, a Taser, identification documents belonging to other people and the Sig Sauer, inside a locked safe. Police later determined the gun, which was loaded with six bullets, had been reported stolen out of South Salt Lake, court papers say.
