A gyrocopter crash in Wasatch County sent two people to the hospital with moderate injuries Friday.

A fisherman told law enforcement officers that he saw the gyrocopter, carrying a man and a woman, go down in the Strawberry River, according to Chief Deputy Jared Rigby. The fisherman helped rescue the male pilot and his female passenger, and then hiked to where he could get cell phone reception to call for help at about 11:30 a.m.

The crash took place in a "remote" area, about two miles south of the Soldier Creek trail head, with no vehicle access, Rigby said.

Two helicopters were called to the scene and transported both people to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. The woman is believed to have several broken bones, and both victims were being treated for hypothermia, Rigby said.

There has been some concern that the aircraft is in the water, Rigby said. Officials from Wasatch County and the health department have taken steps to slow the water's current and therefore restrict any potential flow of fuel, Rigby said, although there was no sign that fuel had been leaking.

The cause of crash was not immediately known, Rigby said. The aircraft came from Colorado, Rigby said, and was headed to Spanish Fork.
