One Bluffdale home's unfinished basement was flooded Monday, and three other properties sustained lawn damage and less-serious interior flooding when debris clogged a secondary water canal, causing it to overflow.

One home, located near Gun Stock Drive and 15700 South in Bluffdale, accumulated four feet of water in its basement, said Bluffdale Fire Chief John Roberts.

The incident occurred about 8 pm. Monday after residents started filling the canal, which connects over its 7-mile span to nearby Utah Lake, for the first time this year. The water in the canal is typically used for irrigation for farms and gardens, Roberts said.

Following the flooding, Bluffdale firefighters helped drain the canal and unclog tumbleweeds and trash that had accumulated during winter months.

Roberts said neighbors and Public Works employees joined firefighters in pumping water from the affected homes and building up the road where the canal broke until nearly midnight.

He added the debris was not weather-related, and the canal has never had problems like this before. No injuries were reported.

Cleanup efforts continued Tuesday, and Roberts said a cost estimate of the damage was still unknown.
