Salt Lake City police are looking for information about a fight near the downtown homeless shelter that left one woman hospitalized with stab wounds.

The altercation occurred Sunday about 6:30 p.m. near 200 South and 500 West, Salt Lake police Sgt. Robin Heiden said.

Heiden said the woman and her boyfriend stopped their car to confront two people they saw on the side of the road. The nature of the conflict between the individuals isn't clear, Heiden said, but during the confrontation, an unidentified woman pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim three times in the torso.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, and her boyfriend fled in their vehicle and flagged down a police officer to get help.

The victim was taken to an area hospital in serious condition, but was quickly upgraded to stable condition, Heiden said.

Officers searched the area for the woman's alleged assailant without success and no weapon was found.

Investigators are now reviewing surveillance video from the nearby homeless shelter to help them identify the suspect, Heiden said.
