Directions • From State Road 24 in Capitol Reef National Park, take the Notom-Bullfrog Road south. The road is unpaved much of the way; check with park rangers for road conditions if recent weather has been severe. The trailhead is just over 34 miles south of S.R. 24, about 1.8 miles south of the Burr Trail Road turnoff. There is a small parking area and a sign on the west side of the road.
Hike • Surprise Canyon offers a short, easy hike into a gorge in the Waterpocket Fold at the southern reaches of Capitol Reef National Park. It is a lovely, manageable adventure — ideal for introducing small children to southern Utah's slickrock canyons. Consider wearing long pants in autumn to protect yourself from the swaths of Russian Thistle.
From the trailhead, proceed west along the footpath. You will see a few trail junctions, but don't worry — they all lead to the wash of Surprise Canyon, which is about a half mile from the trailhead. Enjoy the colorful rock formations and cooler temperatures in the shade until you reach a steep area about a mile from the trailhead.
