Salt Lake County search and rescue workers helped a stranded couple, cold and soaked by rain with darkness falling, and their dog to safety in Millcreek Canyon late Saturday night.

Unified Police Detective Chuck Malm said a 911 call from a friend of the couple came in at 7:10 p.m., saying they were unable to safely continue back down the Church Fork Trail from 8,299-foot Grandeur Peak.

"UPD officers were able to make cell phone contact with the hikers, [who] gave them a general area of where to find them. At approximately 10:45 p.m., search and rescue located the hikers about 1,000 feet from the Grandeur Peak summit," Malm stated.

Rescuers led the couple and their husky dog back down the mountain, where they were checked out by paramedics, deemed to be in good condition and released to return to their home.

The most popular of the trails leading to the scenic summit of Grandeur Peak is the Church Trail, about a 6-mile round trip that rises about 2,500 feet from its trailhead to the summit.
